What do I need to know about charging GST, PST, or QST?

Quick answers to common questions about setting up and applying sales tax on your quotes and invoices in ATB Invoicing.

Do I need to charge GST/HST?

If your business's annual revenue is under the CRA small-supplier threshold ($30,000 CAD over four consecutive calendar quarters), or you sell certain exempt goods or services, you are generally not required to register for or charge GST/HST. If your revenue exceeds this threshold, you must register with the CRA and collect sales tax.

Note: ATB Invoicing does not automatically verify your tax registration status—it only calculates and applies tax based on the toggles and rates you select. Consult your accountant if you are unsure whether you should be collecting tax.

Do I need to charge PST/QST?

Whether you need to charge Provincial Sales Tax (PST) or Quebec Sales Tax (QST) depends on provincial tax regulations and whether you meet registration requirements for selling into specific provinces.

Determining which taxes apply—and at what rate—is based on the province of your customer (where the goods or services are delivered), not where your business operates. For example, if your business is based in Alberta but you sell services to a client in Ontario, HST applies based on the customer's location.

What rate should I use?

Because sales tax rules vary across regions, consult your accountant or refer to official government websites (such as the Canada Revenue Agency or provincial tax registries) to confirm the exact tax rates required for your specific business activities.

Can I charge tax on some line items but not others?

Yes. ATB Invoicing permits line-specific tax rates.

Where do I track total taxes collected?

The GST/HST collected widget on your dashboard automatically totals all sales tax recorded on Paid invoices within the current calendar month. We recommend you also track this through your accounting platform.

Can ATB Invoicing generate a formal GST/HST return?

No. ATB Invoicing is a supporting tool, but please work with your accounting software and a tax professional for formal filings.
