How customer pays Interac

This article explains what your customer sees and does when they receive an Interac Money Request from you through ATB Invoicing. Share this with a customer if they need help paying.

What the customer receives

An email from Interac (not from your business email). The subject line says something like "[Your business name] has sent you a Money Request".

The email includes:

  • Your business name.
  • The invoice amount in Canadian dollars.
  • A link to accept the request.
  • Any message you added when sending the invoice.

How the customer accepts

The customer clicks the link. Interac asks them to sign in to their bank's online banking. Every Canadian bank supports Interac e-Transfer.

Once signed in, the customer sees the Money Request in their bank's Interac section and clicks Accept. They choose which account to pay from and confirm.

When ATB Invoicing shows it as Paid

As soon as the transfer settles, the invoice status in ATB Invoicing changes to Paid. This is usually within a minute of the customer confirming the transfer.

If the invoice status has not updated within a few minutes, click Refresh on the invoice detail page. See Refresh an Interac payment status.

If the customer's bank does not support the amount

Canadian banks impose per-transfer limits (often $3,000). If your invoice exceeds the customer's daily or per-transfer limit, they will not be able to complete the request. Options:

  • Break the invoice into smaller amounts (void the original, create two or more smaller invoices).
  • Ask the customer to arrange a limit increase with their bank (usually same-day).
